¶ Deep Analysis
"You Really Got Me" is often cited as the birth of hard rock. Its distorted, two-chord riff was aggressive, raw, and louder than anything else on the radio in 1964.
The Slashed Speaker
The unique distortion sound didn't come from a pedal (which hadn't been invented yet). Guitarist Dave Davies achieved it by slashing the speaker cone of his Elpico amplifier with a razor blade, creating a fuzzy, buzzing tone.
The song features a wild, chaotic guitar solo from Dave Davies (though often rumored to be played by Jimmy Page, both Davies and Page have denied this).
